How it works
- Kiwi earners give to charities of their choice with each pay, receiving the tax credit at the same time
- Employers collect donations on their behalf and apply the tax credit to their PAYE, with the option to match
- Charities receive 100% of donations from Payve who invoice employers on their behalf

FounderGiving is one of the few human experiences which leaves both parties better off. Having supported charities financially for sometime, I'm excited to be building a democratised platform to support some amazing smaller charities.

Gareth Cronin
Co-founderI love the way technology can be harnessed to make a good thing even better. I'm taking what I've learned building solutions for private business to create a platform that will elevate an amazing (but little known) way of giving to where it belongs.

Phil Cockrell
Co-founderGenerosity is something that AI will never understand so I'm much more excited to be spending my time on a giving platform than a ChatGPT one. I help out Payve with the UX and bring a customer-first perspective to everything we do.

GrowthGiving time to charity has always been important to me - but I never have enough of it! By enabling giving at scale, I can have far greater impact in as many hours, and help causes that will really benefit from a leg up.

DesignAs a designer, simplifying things is something I am naturally passionate about. When the opportunity arose to help simplify the process of giving to charities, it was something that I couldn't turn down.

StrategyImagine getting more funding into the hands of organisations that are truly improving people's lives - too cool not to be part of! I'm super-pumped to join Payve, helping on commercials and anywhere I can lend a hand.

EngineeringSupporting charities has always been a priority for me; I'm excited to be able to join a team that is using their volunteer time to enable giving at scale.
Our story
Payve was born out of a desire to match charities that need better access to consistent and increasing funding with people wanting to donate to causes they care deeply about.
"Kiwis love to give and we want to make it easier for them to share that generosity with less known but equally deserving charities" — Josh Comrie, Payve founder.
Providing pro-bono advisory to charities during the Covid lockdown era, it became clear to Josh that there are a plethora of phenomenal charities doing important mahi across Aotearoa but lack of awareness and funding is hindering their potential. These tier two and three charities face a shared challenge: gaining access to donors who care and want to contribute to their causes is a constant slog and really expensive. He needed to understand why…
Joining forces with co-founders Gareth and Phil, the team dove into existing data and insights, then surveyed and spoke to businesses and individuals across New Zealand, and identified these conclusive themes;
- Employers want to create a culture of giving, and support causes they care for
- Organisations see many positive benefits from inspiring a culture of giving
- Individuals have a desire to give more than they currently do
- People want better cause-based options for their contributions
- Lack of understanding/admin means donors miss claiming tax benefits
- Trust is important - people want more transparency from charities
Cue Payve - a charity for giving. Payve makes it easy for employees to give, employers to match, and to help a more diverse range of charities gain access to an ever expanding base of donors who care deeply about what they do.
The brand represents the notion of a paving stone providing the foundation for a path. This path is symbolic of marking a journey and making its steps clear. Payve adds a V to the references of pay-as-you-earn.
Frequently asked questions
-
How much of my donation actually goes to my chosen charities?
100% of all donations go directly to the charity. Participating businesses (the employers) pay a fee to support Payve’s operations.
-
How did you select the charities available?
We started with the most common causes (e.g. “health”), then curated options based on insights into their work and plans. Our core goal is to enable Kiwis to discover and give to smaller (second/third tier) charities, who struggle to raise their profile and access consistent funding, rather than the household names.
-
What is this tax rebate - how much is it?
You’ll automatically receive a credit for 33% of your donation, every time you donate. Rather than wait for annual filing, this happens each pay.
-
Do I need to submit a tax return for my deductions?
No, it's all handled for you through the magic of Payve and our integration with the IRD.
-
What are the benefits for employers?
Exceptional vibes, karma and a LOT less admin! Payve allows businesses to offer payroll giving as part of their company benefits package - helping them attract and retain value-driven employees and showcase their generosity to the world (if they wish).
-
I’m already donating to a charity - can I move my donations to go through Payve?
It depends. If it’s a charity available in Payve, absolutely. Just let us know who and how much- don’t forget to cancel the other A/P or credit card payment.
If it’s someone else, please get in touch and we can see if they fit the criteria for Payve - e.g. smaller second and third tier charities.
-
Can I give to more than one charity per pay?
Yes. You can split your donationion evenly between as many charities as you like.
-
How often can I change the charities I give to?
Anytime, up to 7 days before your next payday. Every donation matters but we encourage supporting a year at a time if you can manage it.
-
How often can I change or pause my donation?
Anytime, up to 7 days before your next payday. You can pause donations for as long as you like, including indefinitely.
-
How do I stop donations?
Anytime, up to 7 days before your next pay. Simply pause indefinitely.
-
Where do the Payve employer fees go?
Payve is a purpose-led, not-for-profit, registered as a charity in New Zealand (registration number CC61691). Our team donates their time, but building and maintaining the platform and supporting those using it, costs. Our fees cover these - any surplus will be donated to charity.
-
How do I get my employer to start using Payve?
Share this website, then get in touch (help@payve.org) and introduce us to (ideally) your CEO/decision maker.
-
What do you do with my data?
We only use your data to support our purpose: distributing donations to deserving charities - check out our privacy policy for details.
-
What insight will I get on how the charity spends my donations?
We’re working on a quarterly update template, which should be live later this year. We'll work with whatever the charities have in place in the meantime.
-
How do I know that my employer is donating what they say they are?
Employee contributions will be transparent throughout the Payve setup process. We’ll also produce an annual report for all givers and their employers so you can all see your collective impact.
-
Is there a way I can get involved in Payve, other than just money?
Yes! From time to time we need specific professional skills (think accounting, legal, marketing and relationship management) - if volunteering with us appeals, we’d love to hear from you.
